Belly dance is a celebration...
Traditionally, women danced only for each other, passing the dance from mother to daughter to granddaughter. Belly dance is an art form created by women, for women, designed to accentuate the natural curves of the female form. Dancers of all body types can
experience the freedom of immersing themselves in the
middle-eastern music, their swaying hips and undulating
torsos creating a rhythmic counter-point to the drums.
Isolated movements of individual parts of the body are the most challenging aspects of belly dancing. The dance uses the entire body, not just the belly; belly size is inconsequential. At the same time, belly dance gives the female body the right to be “round” rather than the Western cultural preference for flat stomachs.
The female bone and muscle structure make the movements of the
dance natural, improving a woman’s innate grace and flexibility. Women of all ages, social, and cultural backgrounds feel as if belly dance speaks to them because of the many different rewards it offers.
